Coconut kefir, WHAT??!!

So a few months ago, I posted about the amazing brand SO Delicious, famous for it's dairy-free desserts, and I told you to "[t]hrow out your milk and run, don't walk, to Whole Foods. They now carry coconut milk in a carton!!!" I'm still totally digging the coconut milk, particularly because the unsweetened version doesn't have any natural or added sugars, perfect for the detox I'm building up for.

The big news I have is that they now make kefir!!! Ah but what is kefir you might ask? It is a fermented milk drink, a product right in between milk and yogurt. It's basically thick milk with probiotics (healthy bacteria) such as acidophilus that are extremely beneficial for your digestive system. Kefir has been used in many Eastern European ethnic diets, and is one of the keys to those cultures' incredible longevity rates.

Since most people have milk or soy intolerances, the coconut milk kefir is a brilliant solution. The coconut milk yogurts do have added sugar, so drinking the unsweetened kefir will fill your intestines with the good bacteria and crowd out the bad guys. Just like the coconut milk, it doesn't have the same protein as dairy or soy products but it's high in medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which are excellent for your hair, skin, and speeding up your metabolism. You'll see the MCFAs listed as saturated fat on the box, but it's good and vital fat your body is craving for!

You can add brown rice protein or Vega protein powder if you're needing some sustenance. More on those guys later. Adding cinnamon, cocoa powder, maple syrup, and chopped nuts also make the kefir delicious. Or throw it into a fruit smoothie for rich, creamy, but healthy deliciousness.
